Thousand Armed Lightsaber: A Symphony of AI and Art

Unveiling Kaohsiung City Government's Award-Winning AI-Driven Performance

The Thousand Armed Lightsaber takes its inspiration from the iconic lightsaber from the Star Wars franchise. The design team leveraged the speed and precision of a robotic arm to create a performance that mimics the fluidity and grace of a thousand-handed Avalokitesvara. This AI-driven performance is the world's first of its kind, blending the power of AIoT with humanistic art to create an avant-garde spectacle.

The performance was brought to life using a six-axis robotic arm provided by Sunbeam Group, a leading semiconductor packaging and test manufacturing service company. The robotic arm was paired with sophisticated music, arranged by a renowned producer, resulting in a high-quality performance both mechanically and musically. The project draws from Taiwan's traditional war drum music, creating a fusion of technology, electronic music, and traditional art.

The exhibition space spans 5716cmx1851cm, with the performance area taking up 2660cmx720cm. The design team meticulously planned the wiring, lighting, and mechanical route to ensure a flawless performance. The show ran for 28 consecutive days, with 37 performances each day, totaling 1,036 performances. Despite a power failure that required a day of maintenance, the robotic actors performed with an almost ideal level of precision and perfection.

The project, which started in January 2021 and concluded in January 2022, was a testament to the balance between technology and humanity. The design team used precise lighting, movements, sounds, and color transformations to create an unprecedented performance through the language of AI. Despite the high standards of accuracy required by the precision industry, the team overcame the challenge and curated an exhibition that had an error rate of only 0.008 cm.

The Thousand Armed Lightsaber is more than just a performance; it's a symbol of unity and effort. The 24 robotic arms performed with precision and detail, showcasing the potential of AI technology. This performance, devoid of human presence, still managed to evoke a sense of unity and effort, making it a truly touching spectacle. For its innovative and trendsetting creation, the Kaohsiung City Government was awarded the Golden A' Performing Arts, Stage, Style and Scenery Design Award in 2023.
